It's official. I will be moving back to Tanzania in September.
Life has a funny way of working out. I went back to Tanzania for a too brief visit a few weeks ago. I was beyond excited to go back to Moshi and see my babies and friends. After a couple of days going to Light in Africa seeing baby Suzie running around (they grow up too fast) and going to Kilimahewa Kindergarten to see the children I used to teach, I went out to Karatu by Ngorongoro to see my baby boy Jack and his mom. Since the community of white people in Karatu is even smaller than Moshi, I ended up meeting a lot of them over dinner at the Fine Art Gallery run by an American woman. One of the people I started talking to was Meredith and out of that conversation came the idea for both of us that I might be a good person to take over her job when she is going back to the US in September. She is working for an American couple who run a clinic in Karatu (www.fameafrica.org) and organizing the doctors and nurses who come to volunteer. Dr. Frank and his wife Susan put a lot of emphasis on trying to train the Tanzanian doctors and not just treating patients. They want to expand the clinic into a teaching hospital in the next few years.
So, I will leave grey and crowded London to move to Karatu at the edge of Ngorongoro Conservation Area in August/September. I'm beyond excited about this and will also be close to Jack and his mom who are living about 2 hours drive from Karatu. The only thing missing will be Claire, Kris, Alisa, Joelle and Scarlett to go out to Glacier and La Liga at night but I'm sure they will be the occasional weekend in Moshi to visit Light in Africa and Glacier.
